Those who walk along the Camino de Santiago will eventually pass by the Spanish winery Bodegas Alvia, which is situated in the litte town of Ventosa. The wines of this areas are usually well-made and and rich of flavors.
![]() The winery cultivates an area of over 30 hectares in the heart of the famous Rioja Alta wine region. The winegrowers are particularly proud of their vines, since some of them are over a hundred years old. This age is undoubtedly a rarity in wine-growing and the reason for a lower yield. Additionally, vines like these are usually 30 or 40 year old and the uneconomical. But at Bodegas Alvia things are different.
Over the decades, these old vines have formed deep, widely ramified roots. This does not only enable them to cope with the drought in the hot summer but also provides the vines with more minerals. These old vines, however, produce fantastic, exclusive wines with intense aromas due to the rationalized but sufficient supply of nutrients to fewer grapes as usual.

![]() The winery cultivates the red varieties Tempranillo, Garnacha (also know as Grenache), Mazuelo ( also know as Carignan) and Graciano. There are also two white varieties Malvasía and Viura, which is also called Macabeo in the region. And the winemakers insist on harvesting manually.
After the harvest, the winemlakers select grapes by hand in the winery - they only take the best. The wines are matured in barriques of French, Hungarian and American oak.

![]() Their wide assortment includes both monovarieties and cuvées. Bodegas Alvia's top product, which is of course strictly limited, is a pure Tempranillo, vinified from grapes of a more than a hundred year old vine. It is bottled exclusively in magnum bottles, each one numbered and signed by oenologist Alfredo Bernáldez.
